Quaal Finally Captures Feature

by Ed Inloes

Owosso, MI (8/14/21) – Perfect weather was enjoyed by all, but especially by all the kids that were in attendance for the annual Marie Smith Kid’s Bike Night at Owosso Speedway. Over 60 bikes of all sizes were given away to lucky junior race fans at intermission. The Howe Racing Enterprises Modifieds started the racing action with Nick Clemens setting fast time in qualifying. In the 30 lap feature, Scott Quaal made quick work of the front row starters and took the lead early. Once up front, Quaal cruised up in the high groove and set a torrid pace. Clemens tried to catch him, but as the laps wore down, Quaal pulled away to his first win of the season. Scott has been a model of consistency this season running up front, and not missing a week. The win will extend his point lead in the division with only a few weeks left. Clemens held on for second, followed by Dave Christensen, Dave Parisian, and Larry Plamondon.

In what is the tightest points battle this season at the speedway, the Geyer Auction Services Sportsman put on another great show as three competitors were within 12 points of each other going into tonight’s events. Two time defending track champion, Russ Cords, brought a slim three point lead into qualifying and was able to set quick time. He then went out and won the heat race. In the 25 lap feature, it was Fred Cummings Jr. who grabbed the early lead, as the trio broke away from the pack and started their battle. Last week’s feature winner, Ryan Cords followed Cummings to grab second, with his Dad, Russ, right behind. As the point’s race shows, these cars are evenly matched, and neither driver could pull off a successful pass. Russ tried and tried to get around Ryan, but just fell short each time. This let Cummings enjoy a little room, and in the end, the checkered flag. Ryan held off his Father for second, with Rob Sullivan and Fred Parisian rounding out the top five. This points race is far from over with only two scheduled points races left, including the division shoot out in two weeks.

The Owosso Auto Mall Pure Stocks saw a new driver set fast time this year as Kyle Callahan was the quickest in qualifying. Jason Spencer had claimed the quickest lap every week this season, but transmission problems plagued the team all evening. Andrew Burton won the heat, and Lonnie Saumier Jr. won the dash. In the 25 lap feature, the second week of the three week bounty was in effect, as Saumier looked to continue his winning streak. As usual, he started behind the invert and made some smooth moves to get to the front quickly. As he took the lead before lap 10, it seemed as if he would drive away, but Callahan had other ideas. The former champion tracked down Saumier and dove to the inside of him. Lap after lap, the two ran door handle to door handle, trading the lead at the flag stand, neither one able to pull away from the other. With two laps to go, Callahan slips ever so slightly to give Lonnie just enough room to clear him and sneak away with his eighth straight feature win! Callahan disappointedly finished second, with Tony Williams, Brent Voris, and Dan Gokee the top five. In two weeks, someone will collect the extra $275 now. It will either be Saumier, or anyone that can beat him fairly.

The Parisian Home Improvement Front Wheel Drive class was back to running an A & B Division this week and John Eastman Jr. set fast time. Corbin Kelley won the A heat, and Billy Luckhurst the A dash, and Damain Watters won the B heat, and Josh Shiver the B dash. In the 15 lap A feature, Eastman started behind the invert and methodically worked his way to the front, grabbing the lead around half way. From there he never looked back and grabbed his second feature win of the season. Point leader, Dylan Spencer, finished second, followed by Luckhurst, Parker Vozar, and Kelley. In the B division 15 lap feature, Shiver took the lead early and held it easily on his way to his second feature win of the season. Jeff Asmus, Watters, Adam Whitaker, and Abby Kolb completed the top five.

The Finish Line Auto Repair Trucks finished up the night as last week’s feature winner, James (Jr) Gokee, set fast time again. He also came back to win the heat race. In the 20 lap feature, Darren Burton seemed on a mission to get back to victory lane as he got to the front by lap 5. He put some distance on Gokee quickly, as Jr struggled to get through the field. He finally got to second and was starting to catch Burton when the #74 went up in smoke, ending Gokee’s night. Burton cruised home from there to snag his fourth feature win of the season. Point leader, Brad Reseigh, finished second followed by Greg Long Jr, Tony Hart, and Josh Shaw.
