Saumier Remains Perfect in Pure Stock Class

Owosso, MI (07/17/2021) – There were no weather issues to speak of on this evening as a nice crowd of spectators filled the Owosso Speedway for some great racing action. The Owosso Auto Mall Pure Stock division once again saw Jason Spencer as the Fast Qualifier. Troy Binkley won the heat, while “Smilin” Kyle Callahan won the dash. In their 25 lap feature, Spencer took advantage of early breaks and mowed through the field to take the lead on lap 3. It looked like he would drive away from the field as he built quite a large lead right up until the lone caution flag flew on lap 9. This took away the huge lead he had built up and moved Lonnie Saumier Jr. right beside him for the restart. The two battled but Saumier gained the advantage and grabbed the lead. But Spencer regrouped and drove to the inside of Saumier and the two battled lap after lap to the very end. Saumier was able to edge his #M-15 over the finish line just before Spencer, for his fifth feature win in five tries this season. Saumier is a former champion in 2015, 17, and 19, and now has a huge point lead in 2021. Spencer was scored second at the end, followed by Andrew Burton, Callahan, and Brent Voris. Unfortunately, Spencer failed post-race inspection and was relegated to last place.

In the Finish Line Auto Repair Trucks, Darren Burton set fast time, with defending champion Anthony Richardson winning the heat, and Jr. Gokee winning the dash. In their 20 lap feature, Burton wasted no time getting to the front after starting dead last to win his second feature in a row at the Big “O”. Burton was chased across the line by Gokee, Nick Schutt, Brad Reseigh, and Richardson.

The Parisian Home Improvement Front Wheel Drive class saw Dylan Spencer set quick time again this week with heat race wins going to Pat Dent and Josh Shiver. Dash wins were taken by Billy Luckhurst and Adam Whitaker. In the A division 20 lap feature, Spencer got around John Eastman Jr late to take another feature win this season. Eastman was second followed by Luckhurst, Parker Vozar, and Zane Cruz. In the B division 20 lap feature, Shiver held off numerous challenges from Dave Smith to collect his first ever feature win. Smith settled for second, followed by Olle Workman, Sean Shiley, and Whitaker.

In Howe Racing Enterprises Modifies action, Nick Lechota set fast time and Larry Plamondon won the heat race. In their 35 lap feature, 2017 champion, Lechota grabbed the lead from Plamondon on lap 7 and never looked back. He had been on a bad luck streak it had seemed for the past season or so and this victory hopefully will put that to rest. Defending champ, Dave Christensen crossed the line a distant second, followed by Scott Quaal, Dale Spencer, and Dave Parisian.

And in Geyer Auction Services Sportsman action, only 3 cars showed on this evening and only a 20 lap feature race was run for this division. But it may have been one of the most exciting races of the night. Two-time defending champion, Russ Cords, jumped into the lead at the start. Fred Cummings Jr. worked the inside of Ryan Cords for a while until getting by on lap 9. He then ran down Ryan’s Dad, Russ, and the two ran side by side to the checkered flag. It was Cummings by a nose to collect his second feature win in a row. Russ was second, and Ryan, the fast qualifier, was third.
