Another well-known Modified driver is #21, Robbie Johnson. Robbie is from Birch Run, Michigan, and has been racing for 22 years. He has raced not only Modifieds, but also Late Models, CRA's, and Street Stocks. He has something to show for every division he has raced in, too, like his 2018 Modified Championship, his 2019 win at the Owosso Nationals, a 2013 CRA JEGS race, and a 2012 Late Model Championship. Robbie started racing back in 2000, after watching his dad race for many years. His dad (Ted) raced with Robbie a couple of times during his first year, but eventually Ted decided to quit racing so he could help Robbie out even more. That just goes to show how strong of a familial support system Robbie has. His mom, Terry, his dad, Ted, his wife, Ashley, and their daughter, Kenzie, are always there at every race to help out and cheer him on! However, they are not the only support he has. The #21 Modified is actually owned by Rick Wiecorek, with O'guinn Family Funeral Homes as a sponsor. His race crew is also a big part of race night and is run by his dad, Rick Wiecorek, Kyle Haydin, Johnny Hopkins, Mike Ebner, and (Crazy) Dave Collison. They are a major contributor to his racing career. When I asked Robbie what his favorite part of racing was, he said winning. Who doesn't like to win? Afterwards, he said that he likes working on the car with the guys and then having it run well during the next race. It's rewarding to say the least. However, not everyone can win every race, including Robbie. When he takes a loss, he said he has gotten a lot better. He used to get mad and run after other drivers, but now he's learning how to control his anger and take that frustration back to the garage and get to work on it. He really looks up to his dad as an idol. When Ted was racing, he built his own bodies, was very self-sufficient, and was simply a good driver. Robbie and I also talked about what his hobbies are during the off-season, outside of racing, and he said he normally goes to Florida for about a week or so, but other than that he continues working on cars to get prepped for the next race season. For the 2023 race season, he plans on coming back to continue racing at Owosso Speedway to see all of the great things that are happening and to experience it all first hand! While Robbie may not have anything new planned for the 2023 race season, we can't wait to see him back at Owosso Speedway!
