David McManus is the well-known driver of the #7 Modified. He has been racing for a total of 23 years, not only in the Modified Division, but also in the Outlaw Super Late Models, CRA cars, and the Factory Stocks. He is an outstanding 8th grade spelling bee champ (so don’t correct his grammar) and also, the defending “Purified” champion! His dad raced for 35 years and was able to grow up into racing. He thought that every family worked constantly on race cars and then headed for the race track every weekend, until he realized that was just his family. I asked him what some big highlights of his career were, and his immediate response was “2023 championship at Owosso Speedway”... Not exactly what I meant. On a serious note, he stated that he has been the Modified Champion at Birch Run for the past two years (2021 & 2022). He was also the winner of a 150 lap Outlaw Super Late Model race. This last year during the 2022 season, David was able to bring home the first ever Down Right Awesome Down Syndrome Awareness race. He even donated back a portion of his winnings to the charity. I also asked him about his favorite part about racing and he said that it is a constant competition, he just can’t lose. With that, of course, comes the work that they are always putting into the car and the family and friends that are made in the meantime. How does he handle a loss? Losing after thinking he’s got the race in the bag is a whole different story. “Blow my nose and cry my eyes out. Stomp my feet”, were his exact words. After all of the sobbing, that’s when he gets to work on the car to figure out how to make it better and faster. David’s favorite track would have to be Owosso Speedway. That took me by surprise, since Owosso Speedway wasn’t his home track in 2022, but he said that nothing can beat the side-by-side racing that happens there. So, what can we expect from McManus next season? David and his girlfriend, Amanda Parcher, will be learning how to juggle racing while having a baby at home. Amanda and David just recently introduced the next generation of family racing into the world and now have a baby boy. So, huge congratulations to them! Back to racing, he plans on racing at Owosso Speedway next season, but with an all new paint scheme. He will be racing for Wheeler Trucking next year in a white and burgundy Modified. With all of that being said, there is no way he could have made it this far in his racing career without the support of his mom (Robbin), his dad (Darrell), his girlfriend (Amanda), his entire crew, his fans and all of his sponsors (Wheeler Trucking, Rat Tech Engine, and State Building CO).
